Cory Norton is an Engineer/Paramedic for the San Bernardino County Fire Department, placing his life on the line for nearly 10 years. He is now in a battle for his own life. Cory has been diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer in an even more rare location. It is Epithelioid Sarcoma near his lumbar spine that has metastasized into his lungs. His treatments will include surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation.
Cory has had many hurdles and challenges in his time in the fire service. Early on as a firefighter, Cory was injured in a high elevation fall to concrete with an SCBA on his back while on duty, breaking several vertebrae in his spine. After multiple surgeries and rehabilitation Cory beat the odds and returned to full duty. While serving as an Engineer he had a recurrence of back pain which lead him to seek medical evaluation, finding that Cory had developed scar tissue impinging on his spinal cord. They also found a mass located mysteriously close to his original lumbar fusion site. This mass was removed in December but was a malignant tumor diagnosed as Epithelioid Sarcoma. Sadly the tumor has continued to regrow, moving up the spine and into his lungs.
During consultation with his Oncologist Cory learned that this cancer was so rare the physician had never dealt with this in his 28 year career. Due to the rarity of the form of cancer, its location, and its potential for spread, it leaves the prognosis and treatment success as relatively unknown.
Cory is only 29 years old with 2 young children, the youngest being only 2 months old. Cory has the unwavering support of his wife and immediate family, they are his rock. However, this battle will be long and the costs will be enormous. Cory is strong-willed, not yielding to the grip of cancer. His loving family, the brotherhood of the fire service, IAFF Local 935, and SBCoFFA will not let him battle this alone. We are asking for financial donations to assist Cory, his wife, and 2 beautiful children to defray living expenses and enormous financial costs for treatments not covered by insurance.
